Universal access to science, and participation in science, is a principle that runs through the activities of the International Scientific Union and its member unions, including the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP). IUPAP has recognised a particular need to foster the participation of women in physics. The IUPAP Conference series on Women in Physics, organised by IUPAP Working Group 5, has a history not only of success and growth but of making a difference in the physics community.

The fifth conference in this series, ICWIP 2014, will be held on the campus of Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Canada. The conference will be hosted by the Canadian Association of Physicists (CAP) Committee to Encourage Women in Physics and locally hosted by the Laurier Centre for Women in Science (WinS).

Past meetings have showcased high-profile female speakers including Dr. Jocelyn Bell-Burnell who first discovered pulsars and Dr. Chen Zhili, Minister of Education, China. Participants at the conference develop and endorse resolutions to help address gender issues and advance the IUPAP mission to promote physics worldwide.
